40 is clearly defined in scripture. It is testing and transition. When we look at the Hebrew letter equivalent we get “Mem”. Mem has a numeric value of 40 and it means “water”. Water is transition as a baby will be in the womb for 40 weeks then the “water breaks” and the child is born. In which case the mother is “tested” and the baby “transitions” into the world. It rained 40 days/40 nights when the Lord transitioned the earth in the flood. Here is a list of all the mentions in scripture of 40 days or 40 years.

Moses went up Mt. Sinai twice for 40 days, Jesus was tempted for 40 days and ascended 40 days after His resurrection. Before Samson, Israel served the Philistines 40 years, Elijah traveled 40 days/nights to Mt. Horeb and Goliath taunted Israel 40 days before David took him out. There are far too many precise examples of specifically 40 for us to ignore its prophetic significance. Not only is 40 relevant for a historical understanding and connecting of events in scripture but it teaches us how to understand God’s hand in the present as we witness the most astonishing world events unfold.
